macOS High Sierra on VMware

I haven't posted anything for quite some time. I've been busy in my personal life (which is dreadfully boring most of the time). Also, I've been reviewing several new pieces I've written as well as a short story I've written and still debating on whether or not to put them out there. So, having been doing a bit of freelance tech work and fighting with my newly acquired iPhone 5c (yeah, it's old 🤣) I decided to document the interestingly frustrating process.

So I got an iPhone 5c from someone a week or so ago and it turned out it was locked. I reached out to the person I got it from and they gave me the run around and I gave up. It was my own fault for not checking or charging it before taking it. But. For less than $5 I couldn't pass it up - even if it ended up being only for parts. However, if I managed to get it unlocked, it would have made a great daily driver cell phone because of it's small size. Let's face it. Modern gi-friggin-normous cell phones these days don't really fit into anyone's pockets all to well. (unless you wear JNCO's from the 90's - look how happy the models are 🤣)

So after a considerable amount of research, bunk YouTube videos and testing out several "Generic iUnlocker Scam" programs. I stumbled across this video from apple tech 752 and immediately realized 'oh crap. I don't have a MacBook or iMac' and according to VMware's Compatibility Guide, it isn't compatible at all, it even isn't listed when searching through it.

I ended up getting a VM of High Sierra working flawlessly - however - the issue was that the USB connection to the iPhone kept dropping when the iPhone rebooted or when I needed to go into DFU mode.

So I dug my reeaally old iMac out of the closet, refurbished it and now starting again.

In the end the experience was worth it - other than having to contact Apple about logging in to my Apple account - because I didn't have the phone number or credit info I had attached to it years ago I had to submit a help request. They kindly informed me they would be texting me March 12 with further instructions....
